So Memento in ancient Rome? I haven't read any GW - I really should, although I think starting with Wizard Knight might be a better starting place.

Yes, Latro isn't the best place to start with Wolfe - it's not as accessible as the Wizard Knight, and it isn't quite as inventive and adventurous as the Book of the New Sun.

The Solar cycle - the New Sun, Long Sun and Short Sun - are the core of Wolfe's work. Anything else is doomed to being peripheral, although Latro is more important than, say, any of his modern-day novels.
