I actually disagree that Jack's actions in the previous films are impenetrable. He's a rum-addled narcissist who's out for himself and only himself, but gets prompted to do the right thing almost by accident. He's a supporting character who doesn't know he's a supporting character and has highfalutin' ideas about his place in life.
